A charming 1930s Stauffer & Co. Borgel-cased trench watch with porcelain dial, Roman numerals, onion crown and personal presentation engraving.
Founded in the 19th century, Stauffer & Co. was one of Britain's most respected importers of Swiss watches, supplying high-quality timepieces to the UK market for decades. The company worked with leading Swiss manufacturers and often sold watches under its own name while using movements and cases from specialist makers. Today, vintage Stauffer watches are appreciated for their blend of Swiss craftsmanship and British retail heritage, particularly elegant dress and trench-style watches from the early 20th century.
This charming 1930s Stauffer & Co. trench-style wristwatch is a wonderful example of interwar watchmaking, housed in a desirable two-tone steel and gold Borgel case. The watch features a crisp white porcelain dial with bold Roman numerals, a traditional sub-seconds register at 6 o'clock, and beautifully ornate blued hands that perfectly complement its period character.
One of the standout features is the large onion-style crown, a hallmark of early trench watches that adds both practicality and vintage charm. The porcelain dial remains highly attractive, giving the watch a clean and elegant appearance that has aged gracefully over the decades.
Adding further interest, this is clearly a presentation watch, with an engraved caseback reading "Thomas H. Bentley – 8th July 1940", providing a tangible link to its past and making it a particularly personal and collectible piece. Presented on a black leather strap and offered in excellent condition, this Stauffer & Co. is a handsome survivor from a fascinating period in horological history.
