1968 Lotus 56 Turbine: Joe Leonard, STP; Indy 500. In 1968 the turbine powered, four-wheel drive Lotus 56, driven by Joe Leonard, who had replaced the suddenly retired Parnelli Jones, was on the pole and lead most of the race until with just 10 laps to go Leonard pulled into the pits in an eerie repeat of the 1967 Indianapolis 500. A small part in the fuel pump had failed and cost Leonard, Chapman, Lotus and especially Andy Granatelli and the entire STP organization their second consecutive shot at winning the Indianapolis 500.
