Yamazaki Suntory Excellence Japanese Sherry Cask Matured Pure Malt Whisky (1970s) 76cl

This is an interesting & rare blend, distilled and vatted at Yamazaki, and matured in sherry-cured oak barrels. The bottle bears an unusual Scottish clan-style heraldic label. It is technically a blended single malt and not a blended whisky. There are a lot of mysterious releases for us these days to go back 50 years ago to see and discover. Some of them cost a hell of a lot more money today in the same formulas but in labels that are a bit newer with Japanese names to alongside the collection if you catch the drift.

These bottles would have been produced using malt distilled at Yamazaki distillery. Suntory's grain whisky production was moved to Chita distillery during their expansion in the 1970s.

A rare old whisky that is becoming a museum piece.

About Yamazaki

The Yamazaki Distillery, established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii as Japan's first malt whisky distillery, is the birthplace of Japanese whisky, a result of Torii's vision to create a unique whisky using a Japanese climate and pure water sources. After sending Masataka Taketsuru to learn from Scottish whisky masters, Yamazaki began production in 1924, laying the foundation for Suntory's now world-famous Japanese whiskies. The distillery's success was cemented by international acclaim, including Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 winning World Whisky of the Year, bringing global recognition to Japanese whisky.
