This beautiful black lace maxi dress was made in the late 1930s. Gowns of this era are extremely collectable, particularly when they’re in such rare excellent condition. It is tailored from inky black machined lace with no lining, it has a sheer finish, and falls to a floor-skimming length. The sleeves are tailored to a three-quarter length and are cut slim, as was the vogue at the time. The neckline has a square-cut with piped seams which add a modernity to the silhouette. The skirt is full and is finished with a wide tulle ruffle. This dress is unlined and, as a result, the top has a peekaboo, skin-flashing finish. The dress fastens under the left arm with tonal black snap closures. It is likely that this dress was in fact an overlay and would have sat on top of a slip or under garment made especially. For modern red carpets and event dressing, these lace dresses look spectacular on their own over modern underwear and body suits such as skims.
In excellent antique condition with no flaws of any note; it is a very well made piece although no labels remain in the dress. Please check the measurements below carefully as the fabric has no stretch. We believe this would best fit sizes up to a UK 10 or US 6 and smaller. Our model is a UK 8-10 US 4-6 and 5'9". This dress was a great fit on her.
